4 more days!!!

Well, we have made it to the last week of school. I think I may be just as ready as all of you for a summer vacation. I want to take this time to tell you I have enjoyed being a part of your freshman year at RHS. I wish you much success in the years to come. Have an enjoyable summer, be safe, and come back next fall ready to start your Sophomore year with a BANG!!! See you then!

2, 1, 1, 1!

Are you tired of hearing that yet? Sometimes I dream about those numbers!

I've told you from the beginning that most of the documents we will be working with would have a 2 inch top margin, 1 inch right margin, 1 inch left margin and 1 inch bottom margin. If you have not learned anything else as a Freshman at Ruston High School, I would bet you know that! Oh, I know you have learned much more than just margins for business documents.

I've had several students ask about the final exam for Computer Applications. What we will do is have four tasks; a memo, a business letter, an unbound report and a PowerPoint presentation. You will compose the memo and business letter based on a topic I give you. We will stretch the final over several days, so don't worry about not being able to finish. You will have plenty of time. In the meantime, lets keep working hard, and you will definitely not have anything to worry about when finals get here.

There are several things going on this week to get involved in. Go out and support the Lady Bearcats Softball Team and Bearcat Baseball Team. The Lady Bearcats have started the playoffs and could really use your support. Baseball will start the playoffs soon. And don't forget about TWIRP coming up May 1st. Some of you have been waiting for this dance for a while. Remember the theme is "Rave at Ruston" and you should wear fluorescent clothing that will glow in the dark.

23 more days . . . .

Almost done!

I haven't seen much of you this week! I hope testing is going well, and you are doing your very best. Remember the incentives Mr. Milstead promised. If you will think back to the beginning of the year at the first pep rally, all those students got money and jeans passes for their scores. You get to be a part of that this year. Mr. Milstead does pay up! One more day, and we will be back on regular schedule. I hope you are ready to get back into the groove, if only for a few more weeks. I had a student tell me we have 5 more Mondays to go. I'm not sure if that is correct (why don't one of you figure that out for ALL of us), but I know we don't have many. We have a lot to accomplish before the end of school. Stay focused on your tests for now, get plenty of rest, and do your best! I will see you in the next couple of days!

Austin, Texas

Hello from Austin, and welcome back from Spring Break. I am in Austin, Texas right now doing some job shadowing at Manor High Tech High School. I've learned some interesting things today, and hope to learn much more tomorrow before heading home on Thursday. I will be back at school on Friday. We will review formatting memos Friday, and start learning about letters on Monday.

We are working toward the end of the year now. Let's go out with a bang!

See you Friday!

SPRING BREAK!!

Spring is in the air at RHS! I hope you all are having a wonderful Spring Break. We will only have a few weeks left in the school year once you return. Do you understand now why the upperclassmen have told you that your high school years will go by fast? This one sure has.

I want to let you know how I have spent the last few days. I have been in Baton Rouge attending the Future Business Leaders of America (FBLA) State Convention. RHS students again performed well with many students qualifying for Nationals in individual as well as group events. Nationals will be held in Nashville, Tennessee this year, and are scheduled for Orlando, Florida next year. I encourage you to get involved in this organization. You will have a chance to join clubs at the beginning of next year, and if you are interested in a career in any business or marketing field, come join the other students who make FBLA at RHS one of the premier chapters in the State of Louisiana. Oh, when you see John H., your fellow classmate, congratulate him for his 1st place finish in Business Math. Way to go John!!

I would also like to take this time to recognize the freshmen Bearcats who performed in Bearcats on Broadway, the RHS advance choir spring production. These students have exceptional talent, and along with their other cast members, brought down the house at the Dixie Theater in Ruston. If you missed seeing Devin P., Cassidy K., Anna H., Caitlin F., Ryan B., Hannah T., Octavious W., and Jarvis J., you missed a great show.

I hope you enjoy the remainder of your Spring Break and come back to school ready to end the year with a BANG! Stay safe, and I will see you on April 6th!

What a Day!!

Well, the first part of Spring testing has come and gone! Today, I gave the writing portion of the GEE to my Sophomore homeroom. You ask what that has to do with RHS Career Choices? It's simple. These freshmen will be sophomores soon, and have this test to look forward to. The students handled the pressure well. As for the teacher, maybe not so well. Testing is stressful on everyone involved!

Back to Career Choices. Today in the Computer Applications portion of the class, we began our unit on Memos. Students were taught the differences between a memo and a letter, and how the memo is used in an organization. We then covered the margins of a memo and how to set those margins in Word. They then keyed their first memo! The question asked most often today was "why do I put my initials at the bottom?" It was difficult for the students to understand that even though they were typing the memo, the memo was not from them but from the writer. I explained that the writer was "the boss" and they were the "secretary" (which the guys didn't like). If there was a problem with the memo when the "boss" read it, the initial would tell him/her who to go to for an answer. This helped them to understand. Tomorrow we will continue formatting memos, and by the end of the week, the students will be writing their own memo to Mr. Milstead!
